Oracy

Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.

Plato

Children at Thomas’s Academy are taught the skills to be effective communicators in specific Oracy lessons every week. These skills include being able to tell a story, being able to hold a conversation about a subject of interest, and being able to debate and argue a well-researched opinion in a public forum. We believe that these skills are as important as written and mathematical learning and so we have raised the profile of speaking at the Academy accordingly. As well as the specific Oracy lessons, we also promote high quality speech within other areas of the curriculum such Maths Mastery, which has a focus on children verbally communicating their understanding of mathematics accurately, and through the use of ‘Talk for Writing’ approaches in English lessons where children develop and recite extended pieces of spoken language before approaching a writing task.
